ICSE Physical Education Notes - Handball 



The game of handball was first found by Konard Koach of Germany. It is mainly played in European countries of Austria and Germany. 

The very first International Handball Federation (IHF) men's indoor championships was held in 1954. 

In India, Handball was first started in 1970. 

Playing Court of Handball

The court consists of two goal areas and one playing area. 

  • Side lines: The longer boundary line of a court are called side lines. 
  • Short line: The shorter ones are called goal lines.
  • Goal area: It consists of a semi circle line that is six meters in front of the goal. Only the goalkeeper is allowed in the goal area and opponents get penalty shootout form this area.
  • Centre line: It connects the midpoint of the two sidelines.
  • Free throw line (9 meter line): It is broken line parallel to the goal line, drawn 3 meter outside the goal area. 
  • Penalty line (7 meter line): It is 1 meter line drawn in between the free throw line and goal area. It is parallel to goal line and 7 meters away form it.
  • Goalkeeper's restraining line (4 meter line): It is a 15 cm line drawn directly in front of the goal, beyond which only goalkeeper is allowed to go. 
  • Substitution line: It is line drawn 15cm outside the sideline form where substitution of players takes place. 

Equipments:

  1. The ball: It must be made of synthetic material or leather and must be spherical in shape.
  2. Uniform: All playes of a team must wear same colour uniform except goalkeeper so that goalkeeper can be distinguished form other players. 
  3. Shoes: All playes must wear sports shoes that are appropriate for the team. 

Duties of Officials in the game:

Duty of Refree- 

  • To keep the record of score.
  • To control the play time
  • To monitor the conduct of playes on the field.
  • They are responsible for inspecting the balls, the court before the match begins.
  • They're also responsible to ensure that the game is played in accordance with rules. 

Duty of Scorekeeper -

  • To maintain scoresheet.
  • To enter the names of playes who have entred after the game has stared. 

Duty of Timekeeper -

  • To keep track of playing time, time outs, suspension time. 
  • To keep control of players that are there in the substitution area.
